Question
Why is the world so young?

Doctor Newbury
Five thousand years is a very long time! We've gone through many lords and nations. I would need a library the size of a castle to record all the events of our time.

Doane
What the humans do not remember, we dragons do. The world is thousands upon thousands of years old, and even we do not remember the beginning, nor do the spirits, or any living thing. What the humans are unknowingly counting is the time that has passed since the magical cataclysm. Five thousand years ago the world was filled to the brim with magical levies. Some say the air even twinkled. Powerful mages and creatures roamed the world, and it was a bloody fight for survival as the strongest fought for the right to reign. A few mages went to war in the deciding battle royale, and as each cast their final attack, their combining magics striking set off a nasty backlash. The shockwave killed the mages and their armies, and hungrily fed on those with strong magical auras, until all that was left was the weaker ones like the small fairies and nymphs. There was very little magic left in the world. The serfs who survived celebrated their liberation from their magical taskmasters and restarted the calendar, after a nice raid and burn on the fortresses the mages had previously lived in. Thus, a rather incomplete human calendar. The world was barren of magic for hundreds of years, but it is slowly coming back. I hope when it returns to the level it was before the mages will have enough sense this time not to try to dominate each other with it.
I do not blame them for the magical drought. If the world was as charged with magic as they say, it was only a matter of time before it found a catalyst. Much like how you can feel it in the air before a bad cloud finds an excuse to storm, or all your whiskers stand on end before lightning strikes.

Question
How did large magical beasts survive the cataclysm?

Doane
Ah, not that some of us like to admit it, but size does not equal strength. We glasscraft were some of the weaker dragons flying in those days. Our past cousins could wield breaths of devastating power, some could even stop time or perhaps they just moved very fast, while all we could really do was make a bonfire and shiny sandrocks. I guess the meek do inherit the earth for a time!
