Do a Little Prance
"I'll be nicer on this one," chirped the kirshani and pointed to clay disks set at various heights. The lowest was propped against the ground a good distance away while the highest was close but nearly at four times the height of the kurach. The slingers lined up and took their turns again. The three lowest targets were easy and all hit their mark. The three highest were a bit harder due to the angle and only two were able to hit the highest, while a third was able to chip it.
"Final round," the kirshani said as his helpers scurried to set up the last line of targets. "Stopping is allowed, but the faster you can run and clear all the targets, the higher your score. Go!"
This excited the slingers and they gladly obliged, and even tried to show off a bit. This had an unexpected side effect of having either side cheer for a contestant based on how well they performed.
When they were finished, the scores were tallied, and the kirshani announced who had placed at what rank. Waebre, Falnor, and Scissortail were the top three, and this was accepted more readily than the morning's results with the flying races.
The slingers were dismissed to their families and the spectators dispersed to go indulge in more autumnal celebrations, many with cubs in tow that were trying to imitate their favorite contestant.

Kori was further away when she knocked off the targets. She's enjoying a little victory prance as she exits the field. ![]()
I'm goofing off with Ko-fi right now. I've been asked about starting a Patreon a few times. I'm not comfortable with that whole subscription thing and nothing on the front page sits still. Double yuck. The last thing I wanna do is support a site that gives me an instant headache from bad design and coding. So, if you're one of those that want to do monetary support but don't wanna go the commission route, here ya go. Ko-fi button. ![]()
Gimme time to re-find a balance between responsibilities and hobbies, and I'll start making little Coffee Rewards.
In news of proud accomplishments, I strung up a solar system in the "classroom"! Mini clothespins are awesome. Paired 'em with some yarn, and now I've got all thirteen of 'em up. Yes, thirteen. Tell me, if Pluto is no longer a planet, then why is its title "dwarf planet", eh? Yeah, thought so. Pluto is still a daggum planet. Finding out Ceres had been promoted from asteroid to dwarf planet was a surprise. Didn't make any moons though, 'cause Saturn alone has at least 150 things circling it not counting its rings, and that is entirely more cutting and pinning than I wanna do. Anywho, I've got: The sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris. Haumea and Makemake throw me off. All the other planets have Greek or Roman names. Eh, if we're going to break pattern, Hawaiian and Rapa Nui deities are definitely preferrable to George. Uranus' first name was "Georgian Sidus" after King George III. No offense to the king, but "George" is just too Bugs Bunny for me. "I will love him and squeaze him and pet him and call him George." Although I think the George thing was long before Looney Toons...
Today's other rant is once again about search engines. As I was trying to finish up the short story of how Dai and Zihna came to be a couple, I got curious if there were any kinds of alcohol that Native Americans had made. Boy, did I get a bunch of snippy results about how "you should stop stereotyping Native Americans as alcoholics". I have never done such a thing, nor ever heard of such a stereotype, you presumptuous dick. Alcohol has been a part of civilization ever since they figured out how to get creative when making something to drink other than water, and I just want a list of alcohols as part of my cultural studies! ![]()
The closest thing I ended up finding were notes on the south west and Mexico involving some kind of corn beer, saguaro cactus wine, something with the yucca that sounded pretty tasty, agave of course, and a note that these all had about the same potency as wine. So basically the desert and tropics. Nothing really suitable for the prairie outside of maybe corn, or the modern Prairie Fire. Then I came across articles on moonshine and how it was a favorite to thumb our nose at taxes and the later Prohibition, and I was back to a good mood. ![]()
Generalized my search, and Wikipedia of course had what I needed. I have totally got to donate to that site if I can ever climb up outta this decile!
...And I have got to make sure somebody deletes my search history for me if I die unexpectedly. The latest treasures are bridal kidnapping and illegal moonshine brewing. I guess that isn't as bad as some writers. One gal was telling me about how her murder mystery involved having to research splatter patterns of pushing a person off a roof.
Officer: "Sir, we've come across proof of an insane serial killer!!"
Sergeant: "Settle down, son, it's just another awkward nerd writing a book. Their social anxiety won't even let them order a delivery pizza, how are they gonna go out and commit a string of hands-on murders?"
Awkward nerd: "..."
