Angsty Boi

This trope always bugged me. The lead female and swarms of fangirls would swoon over this abusive asshole with very few redeeming qualities. I can kinda see how this would be a "author insert of worst fears" kind of thing where they believed they were unlovable and fantasized about somebody who would stick by them and "save" them, however, these characters often put forth very little effort to help the person helping them and the overall relationship is pointlessly masochistic as the heroine lives out a "rescuer" fantasy.
