Rusty's roommates were not particularly fond of him due to his unhygienic habits despite being a decent cook while they were at school or work. He was strongly attracted to Alexandria, who probably despised him the most. Rusty left before any of them had graduated and drifted between dead-end jobs, struggling with depression and alcoholism until one of his previous roommates took a shying to him.
